I write about religion. As a religion reporter, I know that faith (or lack of it) influences everything -- what you eat, whom you marry, how you vote. I’ve seen faith drive people to do extraordinary things for their neighbors. I’ve seen it breathe life into social movements and give activists the audacity to believe that justice is a goal worth pursuing here and now. I’ve also witnessed how faith can be used by those in positions of power and privilege to oppress, exclude, and harm. I’m dedicated to examining all the ways religion influences how humans walk through the world.
I studied broadcast journalism at New York University. I started writing about religion as a general assignment reporter at The New York Daily News. I then spent over six years covering religion full-time at HuffPost. I'm currently working a freelance religion reporter, based in New York City. My family is from the southern Indian state of Kerala, an utterly gorgeous slice of Earth that is always in my heart. I speak Malayalam well enough to have long and boisterous conversations with my 83-year-old grandmother, a strong-willed woman who is still the best storyteller I know. |
Reporting
I’ve written about Christian nationalism, white evangelical culture, progressive faith, #MeToo in sacred spaces, and the activism of women and LGBTQ people of faith. As the child of Indian immigrants, I’m also interested in writing about the Asian American experience through the lenses of religion, culture, and politics.
